Using Moist Heat To Treat Low Back & Neck Pain
The reason for most neck and low back problems is usually the result of pulled muscles, muscle spasm, and strained muscles or ligaments.
When the pain occurs in the low back, it is often caused by poor posture, exertion (e.g., moving furniture or doing heavy yard-work), or stress. The problem can also be due to a prolapsed disk, in which case you may get pain shooting into the buttock and leg. In older people, back pain may be due to general wear and tear on the joints of the spine (Osteoarthritis). This is quite common and may cause pain, swelling, and stiffness in the affected joints.
Neck pain can be caused by poor work habits (e.g., Using a keyboard that is too high or carrying a heavy shoulder bag), chronic tension due to posture problems, stress or whiplash. In older people, neck pain may also he due to Osteoarthritis.
About Moist Heat Treatments for Neck and Low Back Pain
You can use moist heat to help relax tight muscles and temporarily relieve pain. Moist heat can also help decrease joint stiffness, thus making it easier to exercise or carry out daily activities. To use heat therapeutically, select the correct size pad for the treatment "Standard" for low back treatments and "Petite" for neck treatments. Rest in a comfortable and relaxed position as shown in the illustrations. Place the Thermophore Hot Pack directly on the skin over the body area you wish to treat and make sure the hot pack is in close contact with the body. For the most effective treatment, build up heat quickly and maintain the heat as high as you are able to tolerate. Continue the treatment for 15-30 minutes.

Lying on the stomach (back or neck treatment). To be comfortable, place a pillow under your ankles. If your chest is slightly hunched you may be more comfortable with a pillow under it. If you are swaybacked you may prefer a pillow under your stomach.

Sitting (neck treatment). Sit comfortably in an armchair and put the hot pack on your neck. Lean back and relax.

Lying on the side (back treatment). If you cannot lie on your stomach, you may be comfortable lying on your side. Put a small pillow under your head. Place a pillow along your chest and stomach. Bend your hips and knees and roll slightly forward. Keep the hot pack in place with a large towel.
Caution should be taken if you have sensitive skin or poor circulation.
About Moist Heat
For centuries, people have known that heat can relieve pain. We soak in hot tubs or apply electric heating pads because we know instinctively that heat will help us feel better.
What exactly does heat do?
• Heat improves circulation
• Heat improves cell function (metabolism)
• Heat decreases stiffness in tendons and ligaments
• Heat relaxes the muscles and decreases muscle spasm
• Heat lessens pain
Medical professionals explain that heat causes dilation of the blood vessels in the area being treated. This increase in blood flow brings fresh blood to the area and takes waste away from it. The result is that heat eases pain and speeds healing.
About the Thermophore ® Moist Heat Pack ™
Electric hot packs are one of the most popular sources of therapeutic heat in the home. They come in various sizes to fit the body part in need of treatment, and they are clean, inexpensive, and simple to use. In addition to these standard features, the Thermophore Hot Pack provides two unique benefits: moist heat and safety.
Moist heat treatments are more effective than dry heat treatments. This is because moisture transmits heat better than air. The outer fleece blend cover of the Thermophore Hot Pack draws humidity from the air and retains it. Once the heat is turned on, the moisture is forced out of the fleece blend and onto the treated area.
The "on" switch makes the Thermophore Hot Pack safe. The switch allows you complete control of the temperature; and should you fall asleep, your grip on the switch relaxes and the heat automatically turns off.
