California Proposition 65 Warning & Product Safety Information
California Proposition 65 and Other Product Warnings
Some products sold on our site carry safety or compliance warnings required by law, by the manufacturer, or by industry testing standards. This page explains what those warnings mean and how to use products safely.
About California Proposition 65: California Proposition 65 requires warnings for products that can expose consumers to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. A Proposition 65 warning does not automatically mean a product is unsafe. It means a business is providing notice of a listed chemical exposure under California law.
What a Proposition 65 warning means
Proposition 65 warnings are intended to help California consumers make informed decisions about potential chemical exposures. California explains that these warnings relate to exposures that may contribute to a person’s overall lifetime risk, and a warning by itself does not mean the product is unsafe. For more general information, visit the official California Proposition 65 website.

Heating pad warnings
Certain moist heating pads may include internal weighted components. Some Thermophore product listings state that the interior contains lead weights and include a Proposition 65 warning. Those listings also instruct users to stop using the product immediately if it is torn open or if internal weights become exposed.
Important: If a heating pad is torn, punctured, leaking, or otherwise damaged, stop using it immediately.
Normal use vs. damaged product
During normal intended use, the internal weighted material is enclosed inside the product. The greater concern is a damaged product, because internal materials may become exposed if the pad is torn open.
Safe-use reminders for heating pads
- Do not use a heating pad that is torn, leaking, frayed, or otherwise damaged.
- Stop using the product immediately if internal contents become exposed.
- Follow all instructions included with the product and packaging.
- Inspect cords, controls, and fabric regularly before use.
- Keep damaged products away from children and pets.
Why do some heating pads say not to sit or lie on them?
Thermophore states that this warning is required by UL testing standards used for product safety certification. Even if a heating pad feels sturdy, it should only be used as directed by the manufacturer.
What should I do if my heating pad is damaged?
Stop using it immediately. Do not continue to heat, fold, tape, repair, or cover a damaged pad for further use. Replace it and contact the seller or manufacturer if you need help identifying the affected model.
Electrical and heat-related warnings
In addition to Proposition 65 disclosures, some products may carry warnings related to heat, electricity, cords, or fire safety. The FDA has previously published a Thermophore recall notice involving a cord failure mode that could cause sparking, smoke, fire, and burns.
Use extra caution with any heated electrical product: discontinue use if you notice unusual odor, smoke, sparks, overheating, frayed cords, or visible damage.
Why you may see warnings on our site
- A product may contain materials that trigger a California Proposition 65 warning.
- A manufacturer may require specific product handling, use, or storage warnings.
- Safety standards may require warnings about positioning, operation, or electrical use.
- Some warnings are shown online so customers can review them before purchase.
Important note for pregnant users and households with children
California lists lead as a chemical known to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Out of caution, any product that is torn open, leaking, or exposing internal contents should be removed from use immediately, especially around children or pregnant individuals.
