Battle Creek Equipment Company

In 1927, Wendell E. Doty and his friend Harry Babcock recognized a business opportunity in selling the equipment of the Battle Creek Sanitarium — the legendary health institution founded by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg in the 1880s. With just $120 and a borrowed typewriter, working out of Babcock's basement and Doty's garage, they founded Battle Creek Equipment Company — the company behind every Thermophore heating pad made today.

With $120 and a borrowed typewriter, two friends built a company that would become the most trusted name in moist heat therapy — and keep Americans out of pain for nearly a century.

A Timeline of Innovation
1880s
Origins
The Battle Creek Sanitarium — Dr. Kellogg's "San"
The roots of Thermophore trace to the famous Battle Creek Sanitarium founded by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg. The "San" pioneered therapeutic heat equipment and hydrotherapy treatments that would form the foundation of everything Battle Creek Equipment Company would later develop and sell.
1927
Founding
Doty & Babcock Start Battle Creek Equipment Company
Wendell E. Doty and Harry Babcock begin selling Sanitarium equipment through mail order. Working with $120 and a borrowed typewriter from a basement and garage, they establish what would grow into one of America's longest-running therapeutic equipment companies.
1930s
Innovation
New Products & a Direct Line to the San
The company develops several new products beyond the original Sanitarium equipment: an infrared heat lamp, steam bath cabinet, the Exerow® rowing machine, the Health Bike® stationary exercise bicycle, the Health Builder® massage belt, and the Health Walker® treadmill — the first manual treadmill ever designed for human use. Prior to this, manual treadmills were only used by animals.
1936
Acquisition
Full Acquisition of the Sanitarium Equipment Company
Doty and Babcock purchase the entire Sanitarium Equipment Company inventory, patents, trademarks, and manufacturing rights — establishing a direct line back to the 1880s and Dr. Kellogg's original "San." This acquisition cemented Battle Creek Equipment Company as the legitimate heir to over 50 years of therapeutic equipment history.
1940s
War Effort
World War II — Fire Extinguisher Parts for the War
The company temporarily pivots its manufacturing capabilities to produce fire extinguisher parts in support of the World War II war effort — a demonstration of the flexible American manufacturing that has always been part of the Battle Creek Equipment identity.
Post-War
Signature Product
The Thermophore® Automatic Moist Heat Pack™ Is Born
Following the war, the company turns its focus to what becomes its most enduring product. Originally invented by a nurse at the San, the Thermophore® Automatic Moist Heat Pack™ produces its own moisture in conjunction with high-intensity heat — delivering the type of moist heat therapy recommended by medical professionals to treat many types of pain. Doctor recommended ever since.
1957
Leadership
Harry Babcock Retires — Wendell Doty Sole Owner
Harry Babcock retires in 1957 and Wendell Doty becomes the sole owner of Battle Creek Equipment Company. Wendell maintains an active interest in the business until his death at age 96 — a testament to the deep personal investment both founders had in the company's mission.
1958
Expansion
New Factory & Office Complex in Battle Creek, Michigan
The company moves to a new factory and office complex in Battle Creek, Michigan — including a gymnasium used for display and testing of new equipment. This facility becomes the hub for administration and exercise equipment production for decades to come.
1974
Second Generation
John Doty Becomes President
Wendell's son John, who had been involved in the family business since childhood, becomes President of Battle Creek Equipment Company in 1974 and continues as Chairman. The Doty family commitment to the company stretches across generations — a rare quality in American manufacturing.
1987
USA Assembly
Thermophore® Production Moves to Fremont, Indiana
Production of the Thermophore® line moves to a new, purpose-built facility in Fremont, Indiana, while administrative functions and exercise equipment production continue at the original Battle Creek location. Every Liberty Collection Thermophore sold today is still assembled in Fremont, Indiana — by American workers, in this same facility.

Products That Defined an Era
Thermophore® Automatic Moist Heat Pack™
The flagship product. Originally invented by a San nurse, it produces its own moisture automatically — no water needed. The standard for clinical moist heat therapy. Doctor recommended since the post-war era.
Health Walker® Treadmill
The first manual treadmill ever designed for human use. Prior to Battle Creek Equipment's innovation, manual treadmills were only used by animals. A milestone in fitness history.
Health Bike® Stationary Bicycle
One of the earliest stationary exercise bicycles brought to the American consumer market. Part of the company's broader vision of making therapeutic and fitness equipment accessible at home.
Exerow® Rowing Machine
An early home rowing machine developed alongside the company's broader fitness product line — part of a commitment to full-body therapeutic and exercise care.
Infrared Heat Lamp
An early therapeutic heat product developed directly from the Sanitarium's clinical equipment line — one of the company's first expansions beyond mail-order reselling into original product development.
Steam Bath Cabinet & Health Builder®
Therapeutic steam cabinet and massage belt developed from the Sanitarium's hydrotherapy tradition — bringing clinical-grade wellness tools into American homes decades before "home wellness" became a category.
The Liberty Collection — Assembled in the USA since 1987.
The Thermophore® Liberty Collection is assembled in Fremont, Indiana — the same facility that has been producing Thermophore pads since 1987. For buyers who want USA assembly, the Liberty line is the Thermophore to choose.

Continuity of Purpose

From Wendell Doty's basement in 1927 to the Fremont, Indiana facility today, one thing has never changed: the commitment to building the most effective therapeutic heat products available — without drugs, without gimmicks.
